Energy from Sunshine Would'nt it be great if we could just turn sunshine directly int electrical energy rather than using it only indirectly through fossil fuels? Well, we can - just not very well. The main problem is the cost. The materials which solar cells are made of are expensive. Unless new ways are found to manufacture thise materials more chiaply, the future of solar cells will continue to be dim. Ways must also be found to increase the percentage of solar energy that is converted into usable energy. At present, for instance, sillicones whici make solar cells have a conversion rate of only 12 to 14 percent. Still, solar cells have made some contributions particulaly in outer space where their conversion rates are higher. They are also effective in rural areas where their demand for power is low and access to central power grids is limited.
